Vigilance Creates Safe Harbor in Sea of Crime

Turn on the television or open a newspaper and stories of crime jump out at you constantly.

The residents of Audubon Park and Greater Kings Arms/Pleasant Acres Extended Area neighborhoods patrolled by Corporate IQ Security officers rarely show up on those reports. A check of the Memphis Police Department’s Crime Mapper shows no major crimes – from murder and robbery to car theft and burglary – reported in the past month within a mile of either neighborhood.

That doesn’t mean you should let your guard down.

Take the Colonial Acres area, about a mile and a half Southeast of the Audubon Park neighborhood. One morning last week, two men – at least one had a gun – followed a 70 year old woman inside her home, bound the woman and her daughter and robbed them.

A few mornings earlier, about a quarter mile northwest of that home, two robbers with guns barged into a home and confronted the woman there.

Officers routinely stop cars that seem

out of place in the neighborhood.

She was on the phone so the person on the other end of the line called police. They captured the suspects, who had piled their expected booty at the door.

Not everyone will be that lucky, so common sense and vigilance are in order to reduce your chance of becoming a victim of such crimes.

‘’The most important thing you can do,” Memphis police say, “ is call the police to report a crime or any suspicious activity. You have to be the eyes of your neighborhood. And remember you can always remain a pair of anonymous eyes.”

And, if you’re in your neighborhood at the time, call your Corporate IQ Security officer as well because the officer may be able to reach you as fast or faster than a Memphis police officer traveling a longer distance.
More specifically, authorities say, keep your doors and windows locked and your garage door closed even when you are inside your home. Use deadbolt locks on any door opening to the outside and get special locks for sliding glass doors, which are especially attractive to invaders and burglars.

If someone comes to your door, don’t open it unless you know who the person is. That means you should ask a stranger for identification if they claim to be a police officer, utility worker, cable or phone company employee and call their supposed employer to verify who they are.

Be aware of your surroundings. For example, keep your eye out for someone who may follow you home with the intent of invading your home and robbing you or who seems to be staking out your home for a similar purpose.
You have several alternatives if you are suspicious or fearful, starting with calling your Corporate IQ Security officer to escort you safely into your home.

If, for some reason, that is not possible and you are arriving home in your car, continue to drive past your residence to see if anyone is following you and head for a busy – and, at night, well-lit – place to call Corporate IQ, the police or both
